From Kitchen to CEO: Chris Russell on Building Hospitality’s Future

April 7, 2026

Spire CEO Chris Russell recently joined Susan Berry on the Top Floor Podcast to discuss leadership, career growth, and the evolving future of hospitality. Known for building and scaling hotel management companies from the ground up, Russell reflected on his unconventional path from a Culinary Institute of America education in the kitchen to executive leadership. Rather than chasing titles or salary increases, he intentionally pursued roles that expanded his knowledge and skill set, even when they came with less compensation. Over time, that mindset compounded into broad operational experience, leadership readiness, and ultimately a CEO role built on learning, adaptability, and culture-first thinking.

During the conversation, Russell emphasized hospitality’s unmatched upward mobility and the wide range of career paths the industry offers, from finance and technology to human resources and sales. He noted that the industry has not always done an effective job communicating those opportunities, allowing long hours and outdated perceptions to overshadow the diversity and potential within hospitality careers. Looking ahead, Russell highlighted the growing influence of technology and AI in hiring and operations, while stressing the importance of preserving the human connection that defines the guest experience. The organizations that succeed, he said, will be those that embrace innovation and efficiency without losing sight of attitude-driven hiring, strong culture, and authentic hospitality.
